SPARK! Exhibit opens at the library

NEWS RELEASE

The Boyle County Public Library offers free activities, special events, online resources, and numerous services for the community. Programs often include storytimes, author visits, crafting, book clubs, and art exhibits. In addition to the many events offered, the SPARK! Places of Innovation traveling exhibit will be on display at the library September 9-October 14. This interactive exhibit explores the unique combination of places, people, and circumstances that sparks innovation and invention in small, rural communities. Teen D&D

On Saturday, September 9 from 2:00-4:00 PM teens can play what some call the greatest role-playing game of all time. Players will venture through campaigns that will test their ability to work together and conquer foes in this tabletop adventure. This event will be held on the 5th Level on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month. (Ages 14-18)

Adult D&D

Dungeons & Dragons is often called the greatest role-playing game of all time. The library offers a D&D club for adults that meets at the library on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Adults can join a session on Sunday, September 10 at noon or 4:30 PM. No experience is necessary, but registration is required. Baby Storytime

Join us on Tuesdays at 10:00 AM for a storytime just for babies. Each week, Ms. Rachael will read themed stories and have a sensory activity for babies from birth to 16 months and their caregivers to enjoy. Baby Storytime will be held in the Community Room with the books & theme changing each week. This event is offered weekly from September-December 2023. (Ages 0-16 months)

YA Creative Club: Arts & Crafts

Calling all artists, writers, crafters, and creatives! Join us each week for YA (Young Adult) Creative Club, where tweens and teens can try out fun creative projects, learn new writing skills and artistic techniques, share their work, and make new creatively-minded friends. On Tuesday, September 12 at 4:00 PM, the library will offer “Arts & Crafts: Autumn Mason Jar Luminaries.” Prepare for the fall season by creating your own autumn-themed lantern. Use tissue paper, Mod Podge, and other materials to create a beautiful stained-glass effect. LED tea lights will make sure your luminary is safe to display wherever you’d like some autumnal cheer! This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 11-18)

Boyle County Writers

On Tuesday, September 12 at 5:30 PM, gather with fellow writers to practice your writing skills, share your work, and receive feedback from peers. Facilitated by local author Paul Stansbury, this monthly event will be held in the Conference Room at the library. (Ages 18+)

Innovation Station: How-To

In conjunction with the SPARK! Exhibit, the Library has created the Innovation Station which features a collection of tools for creation and innovation, and the space to utilize them. On Tuesday, September 12 at 6:00 PM, the library will host a How-To session that will provide the training needed to use some of the tools in the Innovation Station.

The Innovation Station is located on the 5th Level of the library and is divided into two rooms: Beginner – All Ages (in the Multi-Purpose Room) and Advanced* – Ages 13+ (in the Map Room).

The beginner room features: magnetic building tiles; electronic motor robot kits; magnetic sticks; color-sensing robot; engine workshop; LEGOs; Brain Flakes; K’Nex; Marble Run; Snap Circuits; arts & crafts supplies; and more.

The advanced room features: 3D Printer; Dremel Tool; sewing machine; knitting needles; crochet hooks; oil pastels; calligraphy pens; motor kits; Pixel Bricks; polymer clay and tools; robot kits; arts & crafts supplies; and more.

Patrons will need prior training to utilize certain tools in the advanced room. Attendance at this program certifies users as trained. (*Note, ages 13-15 must have a certified adult with them when using the Innovation Station. Attendance at this program or training by appointment certifies an individual for use of the tools in the advanced station.) Come be the first to make something new! This How-To session will be held on the 5th Level of the Library. (Ages 13+)

Morning & Afternoon Storytime

Join us for storytime at the library! Each week we will read stories and have a themed sensory activity for young children to enjoy. Morning Storytime will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:30 AM. Afternoon Storytime will be held on Wednesdays at 12:30 PM in the youth department. Toddlers and preschoolers are all welcome to attend with their caregivers. (Ages 2-5)

Kids Fall Fun: Face Painting

Join us on Wednesdays for some fall fun this month! On Wednesday, September 13 at 4:00 PM, we’ll get creative as we learn some basic face painting techniques. We will have face paint, glitter and stencils for you to use as you create a masterpiece on your face! (Ages 6-10)

YA Gaming Guild: Mario Kart Mayhem

Calling all gamers! Join us at the library on Thursdays from 4:00-5:30 PM for YA Gaming Guild, where tweens and teens can relax, play games, have some snacks, and hang out with other gamers. We’ll play all kinds of games, including video games, board games, card games, tabletop RPGs, and more. New and returning gamers are always welcome. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 11-18)

SPARK! Exhibit Opening Reception

Join us for the opening reception of the SPARK! Exhibit on Thursday, September 14 from 6:00-7:30 PM at the Boyle County Public Library. This exhibit explores innovation and invention in rural communities and features diverse stories gathered from across the nation. Panels featuring photographs, interactive stations, games and videos will bring a multi-layered experience to reveal the leaders, successes, and innovation in each town. At the reception, patrons can explore the exhibit panels, the Innovation Station, and the Wayne Daugherty 3D art exhibit in the Georgia de Araujo Gallery. Refreshments will be served. (All ages)

Wayne Daugherty 3D Art Exhibit – Artist Reception

In conjunction with the SPARK! Exhibit, the library will host a 3D Art Exhibit featuring artwork by local artist Wayne Daugherty. The exhibit features 3D sculptures made with EVA (ethyl vinyl acetate) foam. These sculptures are constructed with foam, then painted with primer and acrylics. Box cutters, Dremel tools, and super glue are used in the creation of the 3D sculptures. Videos showing the artist’s process can be found online at Red Dog Props – YouTube. Visit the exhibit any time during regular library hours through mid-October. An artist reception will be held on Thursday, September 14 from 6:00-7:30 PM in the Georgia de Araujo Gallery at the library. (All ages)

Starlight Movie Night

On Friday, September 15 at 7:30 PM, watch a movie outside under the stars at the Library! First, join our Preview Party to play outdoor games. Then, set out your lawn chair and settle in to watch a newly released movie perfect for the whole family! The movie starts at dusk with an estimated runtime of 90 – 120 minutes. In this 2023 film, an Italian plumber travels through an underground labyrinth with his brother, trying to save a captured princess. Find out the movie title at BoylePubLib.org. Rated PG (All ages)

Chess Club

On Saturday, September 16 from 2:00-4:00 PM, the library’s collection of chess boards will be set up in the Reading Room. This monthly club provides a dedicated time and quiet place for a friendly game of intellect and strategy. (All ages)
