During the Perryville City Council meeting on Sept. 7, the council voted to approve a new part time-code enforcement officer position. Their responsibilities entail learning Perryville’s code of ordinances and ensuring that businesses and residences are in compliance. The code enforcement officer can issue a warning for those not in compliance. The Perryville Police Department can then issue citations for those who do not correct their violations.

Support for the position was mixed among council members, with Jason Pruitt and Steve Bailey voting for it and Chasity Caldwell and Tim Simpson voting against it. Mayor Carlos Miller gave the tie-breaker yes vote. Councilors Rob Kernodle and Mike Lankford were absent from the meeting.

Caldwell stated that she was against hiring a code enforcement officer as she thought their duties could be handled by the police department.
