On Tuesday, Sept. 12, Mary G. Hogsett Primary School had a school-wide reading of the book, “If You Give a Pig a Party.” All students got a copy of the book. They followed along in their books as all classrooms played a read-aloud video of the book at 8:15 that morning.

Many students were excited to be able to keep their very own copies of the book. Classes also had their own activities and discussions about the book after the reading, such as asking students to share their favorite parts of the book, or talking about different scenes from the book.

“If You Give a Pig a Party” was also the theme of Family Night on the Lawn at Hogsett on Sept. 14. The event ran from 5:30-7 p.m. Families were encouraged to read the book with their student before the event. The event featured balloon animals, face painting done by Danville High School cheerleaders, visits from Danville Police, Fire and EMS, food and more fun.

This school-wide reading of the same book, encouraging families to read the book with their children, and theming family night around the book were all efforts to boost reading instruction and family involvement.
