Joyce Faye (Oakes) Hook was born June 14, 1956, in Berea, and passed away Oct. 10, 2023, at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville after a very short battle with lung cancer.

Joyce was a graduate of Garrard County High School where she was a member of the choir and the drum major for the Golden Lion marching band. Joyce continued her education at Sue Bennett College in London, Kentucky and Berea College.

She was an active member of her church and was involved in many groups where she lived. She was an avid reader, lover of music and art and had an undying passion for life. Joyce brought laughter and light wherever she went. She unfailingly volunteered to lend a helping hand to her neighbors and friends.

Joyce was preceded in death by her father, Thurman Oakes; her mother, Frances (Brewer)(Oakes) Adams; and her brother, Robert “Bobby” Oakes.

She is survived by her daughter Nicole (Potts) Hernandez and her partner, Holly Carpenter, daughter Ashley Sparks and brother Harold Oakes (Cindy), as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Joyce made the selfless decision to donate her body to science to help ensure she could continue to help as many people as possible.

In lieu of flowers, the family would respectfully request donations to a local hospice or similar charity of your choice.
