Gordon Montgomery

Gordon Duncan Montgomery, 87, of Bardstown. died on January 16, 2024. Born May 5, 1936, in Garrard County, he was the son of the late Peachie Mae Hurt and Walker Dudley Montgomery. He was also predeceased by his brother, Ernest L. Montgomery, and two sisters, Betty M. Slater and Dr. Patricia S. Montgomery.

Gordon graduated from Danville High School and earned degrees from Georgetown College and Eastern Kentucky University. While at Georgetown he played basketball for 4 years under Legendary Coach Bob Davis and was the captain of the 1958 Georgetown College Tigers advanced to the final four of the NAIA Tournament. He was also a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at Georgetown. He was a former Danville School Systems teacher and high school basketball coach before becoming a representative for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Danville for 47 years. Gordon was an avid golfer and a long-time member of the Danville Country Club. He spent two years in the U.S. Army and served one year overseas in South Korea with the Korean Military Advisory Group. Gordon was a past member of the Georgetown College Alumni Board. He was a long-time member of the Gideons International. Gordon also served as a deacon at the Lexington Ave. Baptist Church an elder at the First Christian Church, a past president of the Danville Kiwanis Club, and a past president of the WT Life underwriters. He qualified multiple times for the Inlse Award, MDTT, qualification of the National Sales A-livery Plus award.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Beverly Phillips Montgomery, four children, Alex (Amy) Montgomery, Susan Montgomery McDowell, Jeff (Sonia) Wilson, and Tammy (Mark) Stokes; two sisters, Faye M. (Henry) Wilson and Jo Ann Lanham, and his grandchildren, Loran Wilson, Hannah Wilson, Kiley Witt, Sarah Stokes, Andrew Stokes, Kelsey Cunningham, Thomas Montgomery and Matthew Montgomery, one great-grandchild, Kate Todd and beloved nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Gordon will be at 1 p.m., Monday, January 22, 2024, at Lexington Avenue Baptist Church. Tom Midkiff and Rev. Basil Hall will officiate. Pallbearers will be Rodney Lanham, Kevin Lanham, Eric Wilson, Dee Hutchins, Dudley Stone, Charles Stamper and Bob McMullins. Honorary pallbearers will be Leroy Horn, Gene Dyson, Bill Peniston, Billy Bob Barker, Paul Long, Bob Newby, The Georgetown Basketball Team, the Gideons, Vince Pennington, Hugh Gates Hines III, and Sue Reed. Visitation will be from 11 to 1 p.m., Monday at the church. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery.
