Library to host a Family Resource Fair; Speed Date with a Book

The Boyle County Public Library offers free activities, special events, online resources, and numerous services for the community. Programs often include storytimes, crafting programs, art exhibits, and gaming events. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming events at the library:

African American Film Festival

Join us each Saturday afternoon in February to watch movies that celebrate the achievement and recognize the struggles the African American community has gone through in the history of the United States. Films will be shown in the Community Room at the Boyle County Public Library. Film titles can be found on the library’s website. This series is offered in partnership with the Danville-Boyle County African American Historical Society. (Ages 13+)

On Saturday, February 10 at 3:00 PM, watch a chronicle of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1965. (Rated PG-13; 2h 8m)

On Saturday, February 17 at 3:00 PM, Robert Gould Shaw leads the U.S. Civil War’s first all-black volunteer company, fighting prejudices from both his own Union Army, and the Confederates. (Rated R; 2h 2m)

 

Adult D&D

Dungeons & Dragons is often called the greatest role-playing game of all time. The library offers a D&D club for adults that meets at the library on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Adults can join a session on Sunday, February 11 at noon or 4:30 PM. No experience is necessary, but registration is required. To register, sign up at the library or via the event listing on the library’s website, or email library@boylepublib.org. (Ages 18+)

 

Baby Storytime

Baby Storytime is offered at the library on Mondays at 10:00 AM. This is a special storytime for babies and their caregivers to strengthen bonds and give encouragement for playing, reading and growing. This weekly event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages birth-18 months)

 

Winter Fun: Let’s LEGO

On Monday, February 12 at 4:00 PM, kids can join us for some LEGO building! We provide the LEGOs and you get to build! Follow a pattern or build from your imagination. Come and LEGO with us! This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 6-10)

 

Y.A. Creative Club: Valentine Cards & Crafts

The library hosts a weekly YA (Young Adult) Creative Club, where tweens and teens in grades 6-12 can try out fun creative projects, learn new artistic techniques, and meet creatively-minded friends. Join us on Tuesday, February 13 from 4:00-5:30 PM for Valentine Cards & Crafts, where you can design and decorate special Valentine’s Day cards for your family, friends, and loved ones. Use a variety of crafting materials to create cards based on your own personal artistic style. This event will be held on the 5th Level. (Ages 11-17)

 

Boyle County Writers

On Tuesday, February 13 at 5:30 PM, gather with fellow writers to practice your writing skills, share your work, and receive feedback from peers. Facilitated by local author Paul Stansbury, this monthly event will be held in the Conference Room at the library. (Ages 18+)

 

Storytime

Each week we will read stories and have a themed sensory activity for young children to enjoy. Storytime will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 AM in the youth department. Toddlers and preschoolers are all welcome to attend with their caregivers. (Ages 1-5)

 

Be My Valentine: Family Resource Fair

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with our community partners serving kids! On Wednesday, February 14 from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM, join us for a resource fair that offers information from many organizations that benefit families with kids. Visit each organization’s table to get a special valentine and receive informational materials about the programs they have and how they can best serve you and yours. A complete list of participating organizations is available on the Library’s website. This event will be held in the library lobby. (For families with young children)

 

Third Thursday Book Club

In February the book club will be reading Cane River by Lalita Tademy. Join the book discussion on Thursday, February 15 at 10:30 AM in the Community Room. (Ages 18+)

 

Y.A. Gaming Guild: Players’ Pick

Calling all gamers! Join us at the library on Thursday, February 15 from 4:00-5:30 PM for YA Gaming Guild, where tweens and teens can relax, play games, have some snacks, and hang out with other gamers. This week, you and your fellow gamers will get to pick what you play from the library’s huge collection of board games, and multiplayer video games for the Nintendo Switch. New and returning gamers are always welcome. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 11-17)

 

Speed Date with a Book

On Thursday, February 15 from 6:00-7:30 PM, come preview a wide selection of books at a rapid pace and pick one to take home at this fun social event for adults. Please note, this event is not traditional speed-dating and bears no romantic involvement or intent, although you may find a book to fall in love with. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 18+)

 

Chess Club

On Saturday, February 17 from 2:00-4:00 PM, the library’s collection of chess boards will be set up in the Reading Room. This monthly club provides a dedicated time and quiet place for a friendly game of intellect and strategy. (All ages)

 

“African American History of Danville” Exhibit

In February, the Library is hosting the “African American History of Danville” exhibit. Offered in partnership with the Danville-Boyle County African American Historical Society (DBCAAHS), the exhibit features historical artifacts and posters from DBCAAHS that highlight African American history of Danville. The exhibit will be on display in the Georgia de Araujo Gallery at the Library February 3-28, 2024. (All ages)
