Library to host Tranquility Tuesday, Pokemon Party

The Boyle County Public Library offers free activities, special events, online resources, and numerous services for the community. Programs often include storytimes, crafting programs, art exhibits, and gaming events. Here is a closer look at some of the upcoming events at the library:
Chess Club
On Saturday, February 17 from 2:00-4:00 PM, the library’s collection of chess boards will be set up in the Reading Room. This monthly club provides a dedicated time and quiet place for a friendly game of intellect and strategy. (All ages)
African American Film Festival
Join us each Saturday afternoon in February to watch movies that celebrate the achievement and recognize the struggles the African American community has gone through in the history of the United States. Films will be shown in the Community Room at the Boyle County Public Library. Film titles can be found on the library’s website. This series is offered in partnership with the Danville-Boyle County African American Historical Society. (Ages 13+)
On Saturday, February 17 at 3:00 PM, Robert Gould Shaw leads the U.S. Civil War’s first all-black volunteer company, fighting prejudices from both his own Union Army, and the Confederates. (Rated R; 2h 2m)
On Saturday, February 24 at 3:00 PM, watch a movie about the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, a couple whose arrest for interracial marriage in 1960s Virginia began a legal battle that would end with the Supreme Court’s historic 1967 decision. (Rated PG-13; 2h 3m)
Baby Storytime
Baby Storytime is offered at the library on Mondays at 10:00 AM. This is a special storytime for babies and their caregivers to strengthen bonds and give encouragement for playing, reading and growing. This weekly event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages birth-18 months)
Winter Fun: Kids’ Superhero Party
On Monday, February 19 from 2:30-5:00 PM, join us as we make some “super” crafts, watch a “super” movie, and enjoy some “super” snacks. The movie is a 2018 animated film about web slinging superheroes from other dimensions. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Families with kids)
Y.A. Creative Club
The library hosts a weekly YA (Young Adult) Creative Club, where tweens and teens in grades 6-12 can try out fun creative projects, learn new artistic techniques, and meet creatively-minded friends. Join us on Tuesday, February 20 from 4:00-5:30 PM for Crafternoon. Get inspired as you explore the library’s collection of artistic, writing, and crafting materials, then let your imagination guide you to create something new and exciting to take home at the end of the day! This event will be held on the 5th Level. (Ages 11-17)
Tranquility Tuesday
On Tuesday, February 20 at 6:00 PM, explore all the ways you can reduce stress and manage anxiety by incorporating mindfulness techniques into your daily life. We will learn and try a variety of mindfulness activities, such as mindful eating, deep breathing, body scan, and more. This month the focus is on Mindfulness and Relationships. This program series will be offered on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at the library, in partnership with the Boyle County Cooperative Extension Service. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 18+)
Storytime
Each week we will read stories and have a themed sensory activity for young children to enjoy. Storytime will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 AM in the youth department. Toddlers and preschoolers are all welcome to attend with their caregivers. (Ages 1-5)
Y.A. Gaming Guild: Pokémon Party
Calling all gamers! Join us at the library on Thursday, February 22 from 4:00-5:30 PM for YA Gaming Guild, where tweens and teens can relax, play games, have some snacks, and hang out with other gamers. This week, we’ll celebrate our favorite monster-battling RPG series by playing a variety of Pokémon games, including Pokkén Tournament DX for the Nintendo Switch! Interested in battling others with your favorite party of Pokémon? Feel free to bring your own handheld console and Pokémon games or your own deck of Pokémon cards to challenge others in one-on-one battles! New and returning gamers are always welcome. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 11-17)
“African American History of Danville” Exhibit
In February, the Library is hosting the “African American History of Danville” exhibit. Offered in partnership with the Danville-Boyle County African American Historical Society (DBCAAHS), the exhibit features historical artifacts and posters from DBCAAHS that highlight African American history of Danville. The exhibit will be on display in the Georgia de Araujo Gallery at the Library through February 28, 2024. (All ages)
