This April, the Lincoln County Health Department will be opening a community garden to help citizens gain access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
“It is something that’s just a need that we’ve seen in the community, especially since I work with WIC families and things,” said LCHD Community Garden Coordinator Jessica Fibbe. “So it’s something for the community to put together. It’ll be here at the office in our front area, and it will be open to the community to come in and work on and take whatever they would like to take. It’s just to encourage people to eat healthy foods and they can team up with the Lincoln County Extension Office to learn how to use those foods as well.”
Along with the extension office, several other organizations are working to make the garden possible.  It will be used as an educational resource for students in Lincoln County.
“I have been putting things together with different organizations,” Fibbe said. “4-H and students at the high school are going to help put it together as well. So it’s kind of just become a community-led thing. Students are taking on the garden planning and planting. So I think that’s something that they’re excited to do, and I think that’s awesome to showcase what the students are doing.”
The health department is looking for more volunteers to plant and maintain the garden.
“I also want to get the word into the community for people who want to participate,” Fibbe said. “I have a registration and a list, that way I can make sure people are here on a weekly basis to maintain everything.”
The exact date of the garden’s opening is not yet determined and Fibbe is considering having a grand opening celebration for the garden.
