Angela Crouch Correll is the co-founder of several hospitality businesses in Stanford, including Kentucky Soaps & Such, the Bluebird, The Stanford Inn, Mama DeVechio’s Pizzeria, and Esther’s Wellhouse. The 1984 Danville High School alumna lives on a farm in Lincoln County.

She’s also an author. She has written four books, the latest of which is a memoir called “Restored in Tuscany.”

“My husband, Jess, and I have been involved in many historic renovations in downtown Stanford, and I really enjoy seeing a project through from beginning to end, especially the interior design,” she said. “We are still connected to Danville as active members of Grace Presbyterian Church.”

During her senior year at DHS she was elected as class secretary/treasurer, and she is still performing those duties 40 years later.

“Our class is very close, and we don’t miss an opportunity to gather,” she said.

Below are some of her answers about her Danville Schools journey.

• Tell us about your Danville Schools journey. What school(s) did you attend, and what’s a highlight that stands out to you?

I loved my years in the Danville school system. I started first grade at Toliver Elementary and was part of the last sixth grade class before going on to the Bate Middle School. I was in the first 7th grade class at Bate when the new school opened its doors.

A highlight that I can reflect on now as an adult was how involved my parents were. My mother, Betty Crouch, was the first crossing guard stationed near Toliver, and she also worked in the cafeteria there. After retirement from his state job, my father, Kenneth Crouch, drove a school bus. This was not always so positive for me because he knew when I was late to homeroom in high school, which was quite often. After I graduated, my mother worked with him as a bus monitor. The Danville school system really was a family affair for us.

• What aspects of your Danville Schools education helped mold you into the person you are today?

Participating in the rifle corp of an award-winning national championship marching band developed perseverance, discipline, and giving 110%, along with cultivating teamwork. I also value the diversity of the school system and treasure the friendships I made there and still maintain.

• When you think back on your Danville Schools experience, are there specific instances or relationships that stand out to you as having had a significant impact on your success since graduating?

The music department was extremely influential for me, but the art department and Mrs. Reynierson’s “can’t means won’t” mantra helped me push through many of life’s challenges. My English teachers gave me a deep love for literature, in particular Mrs. Shelburne (Swanson) and Mrs. Farmer. Coach Swain’s positive attitude speeches in middle school physical education, Mrs. Nelson, the Toliver librarian who helped ignite my love of reading, and so many others who seemed to have just the right words at the right time. Those all helped form character traits that serve me well in life and with writing and business.

• As a product of Danville Schools, what advice would you give to a parent who was choosing an education path for their child?

In addition to a high academic standard, I had such a wonderfully well-rounded education with friends in all walks of life, extracurricular activities that strengthened my character, and so many caring teachers who also made us tow the line. It was a wonderful choice for me, and I am so grateful to have had the caring people and experiences the Danville School system gave me.
