During the Danville City Commission meeting on March 11, the commission approved the donation of historic logs to the county to be used at Constitution Square to make a picnic shelter. The logs were previously kept at the city’s public works building for 13 years.

City Attorney Stephen Dexter explained that when the logs were first discovered, it was determined that they were possibly remains of the first outpost built in Boyle County. There was a public demand that the logs be preserved. Multiple entities, both government and private parties, provided donations to fund the city’s purchase of the logs.

Dexter went on to say that with the logs being purchased via donations, that legal precedent would require the city to make efforts to use the logs in a way that honors their historic significance.

The request to transfer ownership was made by the county. Dexter explained that although the transfer of ownership frees the city of their obligations on the proper use of the logs, their placement in Constitution Square will allow them to be used both publicly and in a historical context as was required.

In other news from the meeting, the commission passed the second reading of Ordinance 2027. The ordinance amends articles one, two, four, and seven of the Zoning Ordinance of Boyle County to administratively incorporate the Architectural Heritage Board along with their rules and regulations in Planning and Zoning.
