Recently, Rotarians Phil Richardson, his wife, Kay, and Dr. Scott Scutchfield and his wife Bunny visited El Salvador to view projects carried out by partner Rotarians from El Salvador. The Rotary Clubs in El Salvador with support from Danville Rotary Club, among others in the U.S., are working on several important projects that have great benefit to their country and particularly their children.
These projects are called Toileton, part of a larger Wash project supported by Rotary International.
The school children in El Salvador have not had access to clean bathrooms or clean water. The visitors had a chance to see the terrible conditions before and marked improvement after at many schools. The children are taught hygiene and the benefit of clean hands and bodies. When the communities surrounding the schools see the improvement in their children’s lives they become more active in these projects that they help build.
The second area of work done by the local Rotary Clubs is to provide clean water to whole communities. Last year over $90,000 was raised by local clubs, including Danville’s, to build a well, pump, and chlorinator for four communities for 5,000 people. The visiting group witnessed one such project and experienced what a difference it had made to a rural community.
The El Salvadorians were wonderful hosts and opened their homes to the group. Many memorable relationships were built over the week’s visit.
The Danville Rotary Club will be holding a bourbon raffle, including a 15 year old Pappy Family Reserve, Weller 6 collection, 2XO Collection, Wilderness Trail Mix, other bourbons starting April 12 to May 31 to raise funds to support the work being done in El Salvador as well as two major projects in the local community, Michael Smith Park and the New Hope Food Bank.
