The Art Center of the Bluegrass will host the Fourth Annual Family Day from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. Families are invited to explore the Art Center campus, and kids of all ages are welcome to try a variety of free art-centered activities.

Family Day is a great opportunity to see what’s happening at the Art Center.

“We offer this free program for families to take part in some of our activities and get to know our facilities and staff a little bit better,” said Art Center Program Director Christina Browning.

This year’s theme is “Art Grows Here” which is reflected in the craft projects slated for the event. Families can decorate flowers to include in a collaborative spring mural that will evolve throughout the event, and create a free biodegradable flower pot to take home.

Face painting and a balloon arch photo booth will be in the Art Lab Classroom. Visit the Ceramic Studio for wheel-throwing demonstrations, and make something with clay to add to a group project called “Monet’s Garden.” The Ceramic Studio is located in the basement with an entrance in the back parking lot of the Art Center.

Free craft kits will also be available to take home for those who can’t stay and play, and door prizes will be announced every 30 minutes throughout the event.

At 1:30 p.m. there will be a special performance in the Art Studio by the Danville Children’s Choir, under the direction of Patti Wright.

The Art Studio will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with even more art activities for a small fee. “If families want to paint pottery or make an art project with us, they’re more than welcome to stay and work in our open studio area,” Browning said.

Family Day is also a great opportunity to be inspired by the work of local artists. The GLASS National Art Museum will be open with a large collection of work by internationally known Danville artist Stephen Rolfe Powell. For a first-hand look into the creative process, visitors can also take a peek into the active studios of the Art Center’s Resident Artists.

“Whitaker Bank is a proud sponsor of the Art Center of the Bluegrass’s upcoming Family Day, which encourages artistic exploration for everyone,” said Ricky Peterson, Commercial Loan Officer with Whitaker Bank. “We are committed to partnering with local organizations so they can continue to make an impact, one of the many things that makes Whitaker Bank uniquely Kentucky.”

Every visit to the Art Center of the Bluegrass should include a stop at Fern Curated Gifts and a delicious bite at Murini Cafe. Spring cookie decorating kits will be available to purchase at Murini Cafe, in celebration of Family Day.

Located at 401 and 409 West Main Street in Danville, Kentucky, the Art Center of the Bluegrass connects people to art, culture, and creativity. Bringing 30,000 people through the doors each year for the GLASS National Art Museum, art exhibits, classes, workshops, retail space, café, events, community gatherings, cultural conversations, and ceramics studio, the Art Center of the Bluegrass is reimagining what an art center can be.
