Fancy hats were the order of the day as the Garden Club of Danville celebrated its annual spring awards luncheon at the Beaumont Inn in Harrodsburg.

Accepting the awards for their committees were, left to right, Susan Jonas, Diana Gilley, Linda Porter, and Elspeth Cobb.  State and regional awards were presented by Garden Club of Kentucky First Vice President Sharon Burcham and Carol Dennhardt, Director of the Bluegrass District, on the far right.  Winning categories were Single News Story, Club Program, Garden Tour, Membership Growth, Attendance, and Tree Planting.  The club also won an award from the South Atlantic Region of Garden Clubs of America for best program using video, slides, or PowerPoint.

Members traditionally wear festive hats to the luncheon, competing for prizes in several categories, from Funniest Hat to Best Vintage Hat, won by Marji Hines. She wore a saucy little hat from the 1940s and 50s that had belonged to her mother, Emily Herndon, also a member of the Garden Club.

Following lunch, a program was presented by club member Joanna Kirby, who is also chair of the Garden Club of Kentucky’s headquarters at the Wallace House and Arboretum in Paris. She showed pictures and discussed the past, present, and future of the historic home and grounds. The beautiful gardens of the house at 616 Pleasant Street in Paris are open to the public free of charge.
