The diamonds at Millennium Park were shining Monday as Danville-Boyle County Parks and Recreation celebrated the opening day of its youth baseball and softball seasons.

Alonzo McGuire, who has worked for the department for more than 50 years, and Boyle County football coach Justin Haddix threw out ceremonial first pitches at the baseball and softball complexes, and a group of students from Edna L. Toliver Elementary School performed the national anthem.

The real stars, however, were the boys and girls who filled the fields. There are 523 youngsters participating in the department’s one T-ball league, two baseball leagues and three softball leagues, athletic supervisor Stephanie Boyd said.
