Two men were killed in a collision on Hustonville Road near Bonta Lane in south Danville on Wednesday around 4:45 p.m.
A black 2004 Chevy Blazer, operated by 49-year-old David Wiegand of Mackville, Ky., was traveling north on U.S. 127 when it crossed over the center line into the path of a red 2004 Mazda, traveling south, operated by Hustonville resident Austin Wethington.
Wethington, aged 23, was fatally injured during the accident and pronounced dead on the scene by Boyle County Coroner Eric Guerrant. Wiegand was transported to Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, where he died from injuries sustained in the accident. He was pronounced dead by Guerrant.
Due to the severity of the accident, both lanes of U.S. 127 had to be shut down during the investigation and cleanup. According to the Boyle County Fire Department, both vehicles had extensive damage, and responders used extrication equipment to get access to the patients.
The accident is under investigation by Kentucky State Police Post 7 Trooper Clayton Cooper. KSP was assisted by the Boyle County Sheriff’s Office, Danville Police Department, Danville EMS, Boyle County Fire Department, and the Boyle County Coroner’s Office.
Shortly after the accident occurred, pictures of the vehicles were posted on social media before a proper investigation could be conducted and families notified. Although a citizen has the First Amendment right to film or photograph in public, the Boyle County Coroner’s Office and Boyle County Sheriff’s Office ask that people refrain from posting images and videos to social media out of respect for the individuals involved and their families.
