Alma Lee Whitis Canada, 99, of Danville, formerly of Hustonville passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2024. Alma was the daughter of the late Theodore and Mattie Baird Whitis. In addition to her parents, Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Jack D. Canada, her daughter, Betty Jo Ellis, and her siblings: Bobby, Ralph, and Tommy Whitis and Luvian Cochran. Alma was a devoted member of McKinney Christian church for over 70 years. She loved her church and church family dearly. She graduated from Campbellsville College in 1945 and began a long teaching career. Her first teaching job was at Harris Creek near Moreland, a one room school. She was 21 years old. After retiring in 1985, she continued to substitute until the health of her husband, Jack, required her to be with him continuously. She loved her students and treasured the notes and visits she received from them over the years. However, nothing gave her more happiness than her family. Her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews were all special to her. She cherished each opportunity to spend time with them or to see photos and videos of them. Alma is survived by a son, Bob (Jan) Canada of Lexington; sister, Jean Ann (Tommy) Case of Danville; grandchildren: Michele (Johnny) Lakes of Mercer County, Laura Beth (Nick) Maynard of Arizona, Jennifer (Tyler) Henson of Richmond, and Matthew Ellis of Stanford; and great-grandchildren: Chase (Ja’lisa) Marshall, Jackson Lakes, Will Henson, Mia Ellis, Riley Henson, Brynn Henson, Henry Maynard, and Jenna (Eric) Coyle and their children, Braxton and Sawyer. She is also survived by her wonderful caregivers, Joyce Johnson, Jan Whitis, and Karen Jones. Visitation is 11am-1pm Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home. Funeral Service will follow at 1 pm with Rev. Aaron Snelling and Rev. Greg Starbuck officiating. Burial is in Hustonville Cemetery. Pallbearers are Chase Marshall, Jackson Lakes, Tim Whitis, Tyler Henson, Nick Maynard, and Brad Johnson.
