Summer Reading “Adventure Begins at Your Library” is in full swing at the Boyle County Public Library, providing families and people of all ages fun, affordable activities to enjoy this summer. This year, the library will offer many adventure-themed activities. Exciting performances, outdoor movie nights, live animals, crafts, and storytimes are included in an extensive list of free events for a variety of ages. In addition to the activities, patrons are invited to take part in the Summer Reading challenge. Anyone who reads for 12 days and logs their reading using Beanstack will earn a free prize book plus tickets to put toward a prize drawing for any of the many prize bundles the library is offering this summer. BCPL After Dark: Tattoos

On Saturday, June 8 from 6:00-7:30 PM, dive into the history and development of tattooing and its industry.  Learn how to design your own flash tattoo and create your own stamp with the design. Presented by Sarah Morgan from No Man’s Land Tattoos, this program will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 18+)

 

Summer Storytime

Join us at the library for summer storytime. Storytime is where we sing, play, and read! Storytimes in June and July will be held outside in the Library Park on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 AM. Each week we will read themed stories and have an activity for toddlers and preschoolers to enjoy. (Ages Birth-5)

 

YA International Iron Chef

On Tuesday, June 11 from 2:30-4:00 PM, put your culinary skills to the test in our International Iron Chef Challenge! Compete against your friends to see who can create the most delicious – or strangest – dish using only the ingredients the library provides. We’ll be using pre-cooked ingredients for our dishes, but the assembly and final decorations of your edible creations are up to you. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 11-17)

 

Boyle County Writers

On Tuesday, June 11 at 5:30 PM, gather with fellow writers to practice your writing skills, share your work, and receive feedback from peers. Facilitated by local author Paul Stansbury, this monthly event will be held in the Conference Room at the library. (Ages 18+)

 

Scarlet Cup Storytelling Workshop

On Tuesday, June 11 from 6:00-7:30 PM, Scarlet Cup Theatre will present an interactive workshop where participants will learn the skills of live storytelling, including performance and composition. Participants will tell their own stories, interview one another, write down stories they hear, and explore the ethics and practice of sharing another person’s story. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 18+)

 

Germination Station

Our popular seedling program returns! If you are looking to start or expand a garden, or if you would like to foster some indoor plants, the library will be hosting a seed germination program on Wednesday, June 12 from 1:00-3:00 PM. Stop by the library lobby, pick your seeds, and plant them in our germination pots to take home to your garden or indoor pots when they are ready. This event will be held in the Library Rotunda. (All ages)

 

Adventures in the Arts: Kids Improvisation & Acting

Have you ever been interested in getting on stage or thought “I can do that!” while watching a show? On Wednesday, June 12 at 3:30 PM, learn basic skills about improvisation and acting and see if you’d like to take the next steps into these arts! This program is presented by Opening Act Performing Arts. This event will be held in the Community Room. (Ages 6-10)

 

Thursday FunDay: Freddy Fossil

As part of the summer Thursday FunDays performance series, on Thursday, June 13 at 10:30 AM the library will bring Freddy Fossil to Gravely Hall at Danville High School. Grab your gear and join Freddy Fossil, a zany dino hunter, who has created laughter and learning at hundreds of libraries nationwide. With his one–of–a–kind, up–beat, and interactive show, Freddy Fossil fosters a love for exploration, adventure, and discovery. This event is free to attend. ASL interpretation will be available at this event. (All ages)

 

Adventure Short Fiction Writing Workshop

On Thursday, June 13 from 5:30-7:00 PM, the library will host the second session of a 4-part writing workshop with a focus on creating stories in the genre of Adventure. Led by local author Paul Stansbury, this is a hands-on instructional workshop designed to help writers develop their skills. This program will be held weekly in the Conference Room. (Ages 18+)

 

Book-to-Play: That Book Woman

On Thursday, June 13 at 6:00 PM, Heather Henson, local author and managing director of Pioneer Playhouse, and Holly Hepp-Galván, award-winning NYC playwright, will talk about their collaboration in adapting Henson’s book “That Book Woman” for the stage at Pioneer Playhouse this summer.

“That Book Woman” is an award-winning picture book, illustrated by Caldecott Medal-winner, David Small, and published by Simon and Schuster in 2008, which celebrates the work of the Pack Horse Librarians of Eastern Kentucky. “That Book Woman,” the play, will run this summer from July 2-20 at Danville’s Pioneer Playhouse.

Pioneer Playhouse is Kentucky’s oldest outdoor theatre, and will be celebrating its 75th anniversary this summer. Henson and Hepp-Galván will discuss the play and the process of adaptation, but will also delve into some of Pioneer Playhouse’s unique history. This event will be held in the Reading Room at the library. (Ages 18+)

About the author: Heather Henson has been writing children’s books for nearly 20 years, and running Pioneer Playhouse, along with her brother, Robby Henson, for the past 12 years.

About the playwright: Holly Hepp-Galván is a NYC-based playwright who was behind the hugely popular Pioneer Playhouse stage adaptations of local author Angela Correll’s books: Guarded and Granted.  She teaches writing at Fordham University and Baruch College.  Her plays have been produced in theatres in NYC and around the country.

 

Yoga

On Fridays in June and July, dive into a transformative experience where you’ll learn the art of harmonizing the breath, balance, stability, and flexibility. Through guided breathwork, balance poses, and soothing stretches, discover a deeper connection to your body and mind. Join us for an invigorating yet calming journey toward inner peace and well-being. This class will be held on Fridays at 11:00 AM in the Community Room. Registration is required. Starlight Movie Night

Watch a movie outside under the stars at the library on Friday evenings in June and July. First, come early to join our Pre-show Party to play outdoor games. Then, set out your lawn chair in the Library Park to settle in to watch a movie perfect for the whole family. Movie starts at dusk (around 9:00 PM) with an expected runtime of 90-120 minutes. Free popcorn will be available. More information, including film titles, are available in the event listing on the library’s website.

On June 14, watch an animated movie about a peppy troll who discovers that her friend was once part of a boy band with his brothers. When one of the brothers is kidnapped, the two friends embark on a journey to rescue his brother and reunite them all. Rated PG; 1 hr 31 min; 2023 (All ages)

 

Animal Petting Zoo

Visit a petting zoo hosted by Honey Hill Farm, featuring 30 different live animals! Get up close to the animals and say hello. Animals attending include chickens, rabbits, ducks, sheep, goats, alpacas, a cow, and a mini horse or donkey. This event will be held in the Library Parking Lot. (All ages)

 

Judy Schaefer Art Exhibit 

The Boyle County Public Library is hosting an art exhibit featuring works by local artist Judy Schaefer. The exhibit, which features still life and landscape art, will be on display at the library in the Georgia de Araujo Gallery through June 26, 2024.
