Danny Goodwin will be Danville High School’s new principal, effective July 1. His former role was principal at Edna L. Toliver Intermediate School.

Goodwin said there are many great things going on, and many dedicated staff, at DHS.

“I’m excited to work with them to make DHS all it can be,” he said.

He noted that DHS has experienced turnover in past years and that he hopes to provide stability and consistency.

“The students, the staff and our community deserve some consistency and, with some grace from each of those groups, I intend to be there as long as they’ll have me,” he said.

One thing he is excited to expand on is how to better prepare DHS students for their futures and help them along their pathways.

“I think that’s our number one job, is preparing kids for life after high school,” he said. “[DHS] has a good start on that. I’d like to capitalize on that and keep that ball rolling so that every kid that leaves there is college or career-ready.”

Superintendent Ron Ballard, who made the selection after consultation with the DHS School-Based Decision Making (SBDM) Council, described Goodwin as a “perfect fit” for the role.

“He’s beloved by the community, students and staff,” Ballard said.

Goodwin also has experience teaching high school. He has been a physics and engineering teacher at Danville High School, and a teacher at both Madison Central High School and Lafayette High School.

He is a 1997 Danville High School graduate, as is his wife, Amanda Goodwin. They have two children at DHS and one child at John W. Bate Middle School. During his time at DHS, Goodwin played soccer and was on the swim team. He is part of the DHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

As far as community involvement, Goodwin is committee chair of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration Committee and board chair of the Family Services Association of Boyle County.

He and his family live in Danville, and Ballard said Goodwin shows his support to the Danville Independent Schools in many ways, including showing up to athletic events. He added that Goodwin was an integral part of the Deeper Learning initiative years ago and has continued the work as both principal and former assistant principal, positions he held for six years, at Toliver.

“This is the toughest thing in the world, to leave Toliver, because I feel like they have such a strong team, and we’ve got a good foundation,” Goodwin said. “I’m super excited about the work we’ve done in preparing for the coming years. But it also gives me a sense of security, that … as a team they’re so strong together.”

This selection will leave a job vacancy for a principal at Toliver. The job opening will be posted on the job opportunities page on danvilleschools.net Friday, May 31.
