Pet of the Week

To know her is to love her. Who is she? It’s Roxie, the Pet of the Week. The 3 and a half pretty gal has been at the shelter since February! Why? Who even knows?

When she arrived, Roxie was with her long-time furr sibling and they kept each other company. Her buddy was adopted quickly and it hit Roxie hard. She was already shy and skittish, but being alone made it worse. The poor pup was upset for a while, deteriorating daily in her kennel.

Enter Dogs Playing For Life (DPFL). DPFL is a nonprofit organization that aims to ensure every shelter dog gets a chance to “be a dog” daily through play and enrichment.

Playing is a dog’s most natural form of positive interaction and communication with people and dogs, and they learn social skills that help develop positive relationships with dogs beyond the humane society. When Roxie first entered playgroups she was timid with the other dogs, but a little time and patience in a safe structured setting gave her the confidence she needed to be her best self.

Since breaking out of her shell Roxie has had many adventures and met many new people and dogs. Last week she went on a Doggie Day Out (DDO) and was the perfect pup. According to her DDO handler,  “She was amazing at riding in the car, walking on a leash, and staying calm when passing strangers and other dogs on our walk.”

Roxie enjoyed a pup cup and rolling in the grass before returning to the shelter. You better believe she took a good nap after her busy afternoon!

Roxie is fixed, vaccinated, microchipped, and ready to go home today. Meet her at DBCHS between 1-5 pm Monday & Tuesday, 1-7 on Thursday, 1-4 on Friday, and 10-3 on Saturday. PLEASE NOTE that the DBCHS is closed on Wednesday, June 19. Apply now: dbchs.org/adopt. We hope to see you soon!
