This Week’s Events at the Library

The Boyle County Public Library offers many fun, educational events throughout the year. Weekly programs include a Summer Coding Club 4 p.m. Mondays, Crafters Who Care 6 p.m. Mondays, and Storytimes on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. In addition to these weekly events, the following Library-sponsored programs are scheduled for this week.

• Animal Tales

The library will host Animal Tales: Animal Architects on Monday, June 19, at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. This program will feature exotic animals from across the globe that utilize very unique abilities to build and construct as part of survival in the wild. All ages are welcome to attend this popular program. Due to limited seating, this will be a free, ticketed event. Those planning to attend are encouraged to come early.

• Family Make-and-Take: “Plantable Paper”

On Monday, June 19, at 5 p.m., the library will host a family craft time. “Plantable Paper” can be easily made and, when planted, will grow into beautiful flowers or other vegetation. All materials will be provided. This family program will be presented in partnership with Alexis Amorese, Horticulture Extension Agent for Boyle County.

• Tween Advisory Group (TAG)

Tween Advisory Group will meet 2 p.m. Monday, June 19. TAG provides a way for tweens (ages 9-13) to have fun while volunteering their time at the library. For more information about tween programs, see Ms. Logan Anderson in the Children’s Library. 

• Teen STEM Challenge

Teens can test their knowledge of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) concepts and engineering design abilities at Teen STEM Challenge on Tuesday, June 20,  at 1 p.m. At this event, teams will compete in a different challenge each month. This month, teens (ages 13-18) will be building Rube Goldberg Machines. This free program will be held in the Community Room at the library.

• Kid’s Book Club

On Tuesday, June 20, at 2 p.m., the library will host the Kid’s Book Club. The club will meet weekly during the summer on Tuesdays at 2 p.m. for children who are going into first through third grades. Each week, we’ll read a different book from one of our favorite series. This week we’ll be reading “I Survived the Eruption of Mount St. Helens, 1980″ by Lauren Tarshis. Children are invited to come discuss the books, participate in trivia and enjoy snacks. Registration is required.

• Summer Science Clubs

On Thursday, June 22,  the Summer Science Clubs for kids will meet at 10 a.m. for 5- to 6-year-olds and 11:30 a.m. for 7- to 8-year-olds. Each week will feature a different science experiment. Both clubs will be held in the Storytime Room in the Children’s Library.

• Newport Aquarium: African Penguin

On Friday, June 23, at 11 a.m., the Newport Aquarium will bring a live African Penguin to the library. They’ll share the specific adaptations that African Penguins have and how not every penguin lives in the deep cold. Participants will also learn about the natural history of penguins, their predators, and the specific threats that humans pose against their species. Due to limited seating at the Library, this will be a ticketed event. The tickets are free and will be given out 30 minutes prior to the start of the performance.

• Computer Classes

In the ongoing effort to promote lifelong learning, the Library offers a wide variety of free computer classes every month.

Build a Website – Part 1 (Wordpress) on Tuesday, June 20, at 2 p.m.

This class will cover the basics of Wordpress, a popular content management system and web hosting service.
