Tuesday’s volleyball match between Boyle County and Danville had a familiar result, but both teams left with a different feeling than their last match together in August.

The Rebels (11-13, 2-3) swept the Admirals again, winning 3-0 (25-22, 25-9, 25-18). But Danville coach Maggie Myers was excited by the way her team executed its gameplan, particularly in the first and third sets. She said their focus against Boyle was shallow in the court.

“We’ve been playing against Boyle and we know how they handle misplaced passes, so we intentionally came in covering that part of the court, and we actually saw it executed,” Myers said. “It didn’t just happen in practice or controlled reps, it actually manifested on the court. I was really excited about that.”

The Rebels came out strong in the second set, cruising to a 25-9 victory. Coach Andrea Craig said when her team cuts down on the unforced errors, they’ll be tough to beat.

“Receive errors, losing your serve and getting back in the rhythm of receiving a serve, that was definitely a weak spot today,” Craig said. “If we clean up receive errors, clean up housekeeping errors and we’ll be good. We did that in the second set but not so much in the first and the third.”

Myers said service errors have been a focal point in practice, and that paid off against Boyle.

“In the first and third sets especially, but really overall in the match, we’ve really been focusing on decreasing service errors, and we had maybe two tonight,” the coach said. “That’s fantastic. I’d love to get it down to zero, but we’re moving in the right direction.”

Craig said she’s focused on that serve receiving — and self-inflicted errors as a whole —for her team as postseason nears.

“It’s up and down, serve receive is one of our struggles overall,” Craig said. “That’s probably our biggest struggle consistently this season. We need that to improve, but if they can maintain consistency and continue to play better as a team, clean up those errors, we’ll be better off as a team come postseason.”

Danville’s youth continues to improve, Myers said. Sophomore Nancy Gonzalez had two blocks and four aces; freshman Keeley McKnight had seven digs.

Seniors also stepped up Tuesdsay: Haley Wagner had two kills and two blocks; Bailey Matthews had two kills; Zoe Sigola had five assists and two kills; Hannah Helmers had two kills.

It’s finding consistency throughout the game that Myers wants to see in the future. Sets like the second shouldn’t happen, she said.

“They are teenage girls, and that happens,” Myers said. “I really don’t have an explanation, we went with essentially the same lineup. We’ve been making some adjustments later in the season, incorporating some younger girls in defensive roles, and that has had a positive effect on our play. But I don’t know what happened in the second set, I wish I could take a mulligan on that one. But I don’t think coach Craig would let me.”

Myers also said her team is looking forward to postseason —and a chance at the Rebels again.

“We’re looking forward to postseason,” she said. “We’re hoping we get another shot at Boyle, we’ll just have to see what happens in those early rounds.

“It was an exciting match, my girls came to play tonight. They had a long weekend at a big tournament, and they wanted to bring everything they had against Boyle and I think that’s what you saw.”
