A boil water advisory went into effect early Monday, affecting Danville High School and one house in the area. According to an advisory emailed out by the Danville Water Treatment Plant, a line break was the cause.

City Engineer Earl Coffey said the break occurred on Sunday and it was repaired late Sunday afternoon.

It was a “normal winter break,” Coffey said. He explained that the ground shifts as it thaws, putting pressure on the pipes, sometimes causing these breaks.

The advisory is in effect for at least 48 hours. Coffey said they have taken water samples, which have been sent to be tested. They will likely have the results of the test this morning (Tuesday) and hopefully the advisory will be lifted. 

Despite the water inconvenience, it was a regular day for students and staff at DHS.  “It’s been a normal day, as normal as it can be,” said Principal Haley Ralston.

The water fountains were bagged up and bottled water was made available to students. Ralston said the water was free, despite social media rumors to the contrary.

“They can pick up a bottle at their convenience, they do not have to pay for water,” she said.

For lunch, Ralston said students could choose between prepackaged items, like sandwiches and chips, or hot food that was baked in the oven, like chicken nuggets and other items.

The bathrooms were also working, she said.
