The last day to register to vote in the May 22 primary election is Monday.

Lee Miller, Boyle County Clerk’s office front line and voter registration supervisor, said, “We’re down to the wire” for  people to register if they want to vote in the primaries. They have to have their registration in the Boyle County Clerk’s office by 5 p.m. on Monday.

After that time, registration won’t be open again for voters until seven days after the May 22 primaries. They will then be eligible to register to vote in the general election in November.

Miller said people who changed their party affiliation after Dec. 31 will not be eligible to vote in the primary election. However, they can vote for any candidate, no matter the party, in the general election.

Miller also said people who registered during area voter registration drives should make sure they actually are registered. If the organization that held the drive failed to submit the cards to the clerk’s office, then there is no official record and they won’t be allowed to vote.

The same is true for those who registered at their high schools, driver’s license office and at social services agencies. Miller said it’s the responsibility of voters to make sure they are officially registered to vote and are eligible.

She said if a person wants to make sure they are registered and can vote on May 22, or if they have any questions or concerns about voting, they should call the Boyle County Clerk’s office at (859) 238-1110.

“We are more than happy to answer any questions for them,” she said.

Another way people can register to vote or double-check their voting eligibility is to use the website www.govoteky.com.

From a computer, people can register to vote or update their information; review their registration information; locate their polling places; see candidate fillings and sample ballots; and view election results, all from the website.

On Election Day, Miller said voters should bring some type of identification, such as a driver’s license, Social Security Card, or even a credit card. It doesn’t have to be a photo ID, she said.

Miller said on Election Day, whether it’s a primary or general election, “we’re always hoping for a good turn out.”
