Several residents from McDowell Place of Danville worked with Danville High School students on a project for children Thursday morning.

Small, no-sew fleece blankets were made by the group for children being treated at the DanceBlue Kentucky Children’s Hospital Hematology/Oncology Clinic.

Sitting and standing around large tables inside DHS library, the teens participating in the intercession class “Serving the Danville Community” and mature women from McDowell Place chatted and helped each other cut fabric and tie knots around the edges of the soft, colorful blankets.

The joint effort “was a good opportunity for the two groups to get to know one another and for the students to see that seniors are still able to give back and not just be recipients,” said McDowell Place activity director Gina Scott.

The DHS intercession class was entitled “Serving the Danville Community.” It was taught by Rachel Albright. The class introduced students to volunteering and the importance of giving back to the community. Some of their other endeavors included a school blood drive, planning a service project with the United Way and assisting various teachers at DHS in the classroom.
