The concrete deck of the new Second Street bridge is being poured today, according to a construction bulletin issued Friday from Danville City Engineer John Cassel.

The deck is being poured on top of eight vehicle beams that are more than 3 feet wide, 1 foot tall and more than 32 feet long, each weighing more than 8 tons.

“… guardrails, handrails and approach paving will be next,” according to Cassel. “The existing pedestrian bridge on the west side will remain open to the public during all of construction.”

The new bridge is being built by Jave Contracting; Second Street is closed on either side of the bridge while construction is underway. The bridge crosses Clarks Run next to Michael M. Smith Memorial Park, near J E Woods Drive.

The new bridge will be a 24-foot-wide steel-reinforced concrete vehicular bridge; a nearly 7-foot-wide pedestrian bridge is being added on the vehicular bridge’s east side.

“Connecting sidewalks and landscaping will be added later by the City of Danville’s Public Works Department,” according to Cassel. “While the vehicular bridge is unavailable, detours will be marked with signs and vehicle message boards (VMBs). Northbound traffic that usually uses Second Street will need to continue past the Second Street intersection traffic light and make their left or right turns, once they are past the one-way split starting with Fackler but preferably (Martin Luther King Boulevard), Walnut and Main streets. Southbound Second Street traffic is encouraged to detour to Fourth Street.”
