Heritage Hospice, Inc. wants to say a big “thank you” to the veterans of Boyle, Garrard, Lincoln and Mercer counties who chose to spend their special day at our ninth annual Veterans Appreciation Day at Danville’s National Guard Armory. We are honored to have served 1,052 guests, which included 924 veterans and their 128 guests. Of the veterans, 178 were first-time attenders.

It was simply amazing to see 103-year-old Ernest Blanchet stand and state “bring on the women” as he was announced the oldest veteran. He was surrounded by 32 fellow WWII veterans and in the group was 98-year-old Ancil Shepherd who received the second oldest award. Each WWII veteran received a hat, gift card and pin.

During the event, Masonic members from across the state, committee members and volunteers helped serve and create a very special atmosphere for our area veterans and their guests. Outside, the red carpet was rolled out, lined with children from Bate Middle School cheering for veterans as they entered. Guardsman Bradshaw was working hard at the traffic post to help with the event and was surprised when he was recognized as the youngest veteran.

There are so many people who make this event successful. The masons from District 21 started the day before prepping fresh BBQ and slicing fish. Indian Hills Christian Church and other churches provided homemade desserts. And the Veterans Committee members worked at each post to make things run as smoothly as possible.

The 2017 Veterans Appreciation Day Event will be the 10th anniversary and falls on a Saturday for the first time.
