Marjorie Horton Gooch

1927-2020

Marjorie Horton Gooch, 92, of Stanford, KY passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2020 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville, KY. Born on May 19, 1927 in Eubank, KY to the late John T. Horton and LouAnna Vaught Horton.

She was a member of Stanford Baptist Church in where she was the former teacher of the Bethany Sunday School Class. She attended Eastern Kentucky University, University of Louisville, University of Kentucky, Georgetown College and graduated from Union College with a Bachelors and Masters degree in Education. She was employed by the Lincoln County Board of Education, Frankfort City, Franklin County, McKinney Elementary, Waynesburg Elementary, Crab Orchard Elementary, Stanford High School and then retired in 1982. 

She was a member of PBK, LCRTA, Eastern Star, KY Colonel, Lincoln County Historical Society, Logan’s Fort Foundation, Baptist Women’s Group. She also served as counselor of KAS Counselors, treasurer of Retired Teachers, President of BPWC, Advisory board PBK Club, secretary of Lincoln County Historical Society.

Survivors include a great niece, Marcia Heflin Kerby of Cold Springs, KY; two nephews, Gary Horton of Harlan, KY, George Horton of Nicholasvillle, KY, Johnny Horton of Florence, KY and Jack Gooch of Florida ; seven nieces, Bonnie Caldwell of Stanford, KY, Karen Wagenheim of Florida, Joanne Cornett, Betty Singleton, Margaret Horton, Charlene Michaels, Patsy Shepperson, and Judy VanArsdall all of Danville, KY; and special friends, Janet Terry, Glenda Estes and Irene Jaggers and her caregivers.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd E. Gooch; one daughter, Terrie Lloyd Gooch; three brothers, George Horton, Charles Horton and Earl Horton; and two sisters, Jewell Reed and Mayme Gooch.

A one-day service has been scheduled for Wednesday, February 5, 2020. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Spurlin Funeral Home in Stanford, KY. Funeral will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Spurlin Funeral Home in Stanford, KY. Burial will follow at Double Springs Cemetery in Waynesburg, KY.

Pallbearers are Mike Estes, Tim Estes, Gary Horton, Stephen Cook, Don Southerland, Philip Sebastian and Nathaniel Wallin.
