Our pets of the week are Ace and Smiley, two goofy and affectionate boys looking for a soft place to land.

Ace is a bundle of energy in dog form! This mixed-breed pup is young; we’re guessing around 1 year old. He’s got a stubby little tail that is just the cutest.

Ace enjoys everything about life, especially toys. In fact, given a chance, he will enjoy a toy to pieces. Ace also appreciates a good romp around the yard and relaxing in the shade under a tree. He will make a great companion for an active person or family who understands his need for structure, basic behavioral training, and lots of stuffed toys.

Smiley is a shepherd mix estimated at 1 and a half years old. He has an enthusiastic approach to life and got his name because – you guessed it – his smile!

At first, you think he’s going to growl, but he’s just pulling his lips back to say “hello.” Smiley is submissive, super friendly, and has gotten along with the dogs he’s met so far. Smiley wants to love and be loved and will make a wonderful friend for any family or person.

DBCHS is re-launching our volunteer program to engage the community in our lifesaving efforts.

Phase one is to secure a roster of dedicated folks to help with our events and outreach. Some of our upcoming events include the Boyle County Farmers Market, the 8th Annual Pints for Pets on October 23, and Suds & Screams Halloween event on October 29.

Volunteers must be over 18, take a Fear Free Sheltering course (online), and participate in a brief orientation. Want to join the team? Email me at karikuh@dbchs.org to learn more.

Looking for a way your child can get involved? Our low-cost spay & neuter clinic, Happy Paws, could use some help. The volunteers use homemade heating pads to keep cats and dogs warm during recovery after surgery. They need more rice socks for the clinic, and it’s an easy craft for you to do with your child.
