Danville Independent Schools superintendent to resign

Danville Independent Schools Superintendent Tammy McDonald is resigning from her position effective Oct. 10.

She said in an email that she is resigning to pursue other opportunities and spend more time with her family.

“I will be working for the Franklin County School District,” she said. “Being hired as the director of curriculum and instruction is going to allow me to return to my first love. I have always had a passion for instruction.”

McDonald has been superintendent for Danville Schools since 2018. With her resignation, she’s also moving away from Danville.

“My husband and I own a family farm in Owen County, and I am excited to be able to live on the family farm full time,” she said.

Reflecting on her time with Danville Schools, she listed some of her accomplishments. She said she developed and implemented a five-year strategic plan, and also implemented an electronic sub-calling system, a new routing system for buses and a district-specific Response to Intervention and Instruction guide. She also “created partnerships with local medical facilities to provide a free in-school medical clinic for all students at no cost to the district, started a district-wide newsletter,” increased dual-credit offerings and “increased in-house offerings for career and technical pathways,” she said.

She also highlighted some financial and constructional points — she said she decreased non-instructional spending while increasing instructional spending and the general fund balance by $3.5 million over the last two years, led the school district through five “major construction projects, purchased a new central office/alternative school building and sold a former elementary building, saving the district funds.”

“Through all of these activities, safety has always been my top priority for all students and staff,” she said.

For example, during this month the district is putting a new visitor management program in place to track visitors.

“Danville Schools has amazing staff and students,” McDonald said. “Over the last year and a half during the pandemic, we have seen amazing work from both students and staff. It has been an honor to collaborate, work, and be a part of the Danville family. This is truly an amazing district.”
