Boyle County swim/dive places second at region

Boyle County’s boys and girls swim teams placed second in the 6th Region swim meet over the weekend.

The Rebels tied for second on the boys side with Woodford County, with North Oldham placing first by just eight points. Boyle girls were comfortably in second place ahead of Woodford and behind North Oldham.

Danville placed eighth as a team, with girls placing seventh and boys placing eighth. Lincoln placed 11th (10th girls, 12th boys).

“The meet was very close,” Boyle head coach Crystal Ellis said. “We knew it was going to be a fight to win the boys title this year.  They swam really well on Friday to set us up Saturday.  The fact that it came down to eight points between three teams is crazy!

“Everyone swam fast. We had several great swims and a lot of close races.”

The Rebels will send 12 different events to state:

Girls 200 yard medley relay (Cora Gilbert, Isabella Spencer, Whitney Bean, Riley Cerqueira), third, 1:55.65.

Boys 200 yard medley relay (Tyler Carmickle, Corbin Coyle, Mason Lockhart, Alex Lockhart), fourth, 1:52.26.

Jack Stomberger and Creed Farthing placed first and second, respectively, in the boys 200 yard freestyle.

Riley Cerqueira in the girls 50 yard freestyle (fourth, 25.57).

Campbell Coyle in the boys 50 yard freestyle (second, 21.66).

Sophie Arnold in girls diving (third, 287.60).

Jared Stivers in boys diving (first, 445.25).

Jack Stomberger in the boys 100 yard butterfly (second, 54.98).

Campbell Coyle in the boys 100 yard freestyle (second, 47.13).

Girls 200 yard freestyle relay (Sophia Fogle, Isabella Spencer, Whitney Bean, Jaye Farthing), fourth, 1:48.62.

Boys 200 yard freestyle relay (Creed Farthing, Jack Stomberger, Alex Lockhart, Campbell Coyle), second, 1:31.36.

Creed Farthing in the boys 100 yard backstroke (third, 56.33).

Girls 400 yard freestyle relay (Riley Cerqueira, Sophia Fogle, Cora Gilbert, Jaye Farthing), third, 3:52.27.

Boys 400 yard freestyle relay (Campbell Coyle, Jack Stomberger, Tyler Carmickle, Creed Farthing), 3:21.45.

“Campbell (Coyle) was swimming against the guy that won the 50 and was second in the 100 free at state last year,” Ellis said. “He’s a senior, Campbell’s a sophomore, so we have a lot to look forward to in the next couple years.  Jack (Stomberger) had a great race in the 200 free as well.  He and Creed (Farthing) finished first and second in that event. Jack’s really close to the school record too.”

Danville qualified Keegyn Wilcher (diving, fifth, 312.90); the boys 200 yard IM (Max Montgomery, Brady Bischoff, Keegyn Wilcher, Leif Pellant), sixth, 1:54.46; Grace Crawford in the girls 100 backstroke (second, 1:11.43); girls 400 freestyle relay as an alternate (Katie Heath, Chloe Strysick, Grace Crawford, Morgan Vest), seventh, 4:17.93;  and the boys 400 yard freestyle relay (Keegyn Wilcher, Brady Bischoff, Leif Pellant, Max Montgomery), sixth, 3:58.06.

The state meet will be next weekend at the University of Louisville from Feb. 21 to Feb. 23.
